After revolutionizing the way that people saw thermostats, Nest Labs turned their attention to the oft-maligned smoke detector. With the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, they set out to design a friendlier, more effective home safety solution. By all measures, they succeeded wildly. With two levels of alarms, two types of alarms, three safety sensors, three activity sensors, and a communicating LED ring, the Protect is equipped to help you handle all manner of fire emergency. Getting protected is easy; the straightforward installation can be handled by any homeowner, and the free mobile app will guide you through setting up the Protect and designating an installation location. The only thing better than installing a Nest Protect is installing multiple Nest Protects, as these devices communicate with each other and share data

For a 3000 sq ft home, how many Nest Protect monitors do I need to buy?
Erin
from Alabama
September 22, 2015
Answer
The National Fire Protection Association recommends installing a smoke alarm in the following areas:
On every floor, including finished attics and basements.
Inside and outside every sleeping area.
At the top of the first-to-second floor stairway and on the basement ceiling near the entry of the stairs.
In homes with more than 1,000 square feet on one level, additional alarms may be required.

This information comes from page 5 of the Nest Protect User's Guide.
