Orientation Orientation describes the direction that air will flow through a piece of equipment. (e.g. air will flow horizontally through a "Horizontal" unit heater.) Most equipment will only function properly if installed in the proper orientation.
Gas Valve Stages Stages are unique speeds or levels that equipment can operate at. More stages allow for better fine-tuned control of output, which improves comfort and efficiency. Modulating equipment can operate across a range of levels, giving the highest level of fine-tuned control.

Goodman established itself as the largest HVAC manufacturer in the US by producing high-quality, efficient equipment and providing it to homeowners at a great value. The GMSS96 multi-speed furnace uses a pair of steel heat exchangers to convert 96% of the energy used into comfort, Goodman's highest mark for a single-stage furnace. It is equipped with a four-speed blower motor, which provides your home with comfortable circulation through a wide variety of conditions. The GMSS961005CN was designed with multiple options for the unit's gas, electric, and venting connections and orientation, ensuring a painless and quick installation. It even features a self-diagnosing control board that makes maintenance a breeze. When it comes to high efficiency heating from a single stage furnace, Goodman's GMSS96 sets the standard..
  • Advanced Heat Exchanger Design
  • The GMSS96 furnace employs a reliable dual-diameter tubular heat exchanger design. Aluminized steel is used for incredibly efficient heat transfer, and a wrinkle-bend is applied to the tubes to enhance the heat exchanger's dependability and longevity.
  • Secondary Heat Exchanger
  • This furnace produces addition heat by directing combustion gases through a secondary heat exchanger before they are vented. The secondary heat exchanger is made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and it is sloped to prevent condensate build-up.
  • Quiet Comfort
  • The blower and gas valve of the GMSS961005CN were selected for their incredibly low sound levels.
  • Venting Options
  • The GMSS961005CN offers several venting options to streamline installation in a variety of applications. It can be used in either a two-pipe direct vent setup or a single-pipe configuration with combustion air.
  • Secure Cabinet
  • All GMSS96 furnaces are protected by a durable steel cabinet rated for less than 2% air leakage. The heat exchanger section is insulated to prevent heat loss and the return side of the cabinet is solid and airtight.
  • Easy Integration
  • The GMSS961005CN makes it simple to enhance your system with a humidifier and an electronic air cleaner; just wire them directly to the low-voltage terminals on the control board.
  • Extended Warranty
  • Goodman offers a 10-year limited parts warranty when you register your product online within 60 days of installation. An unregistered product has the standard 5-year warranty. See warranty sheet under the "Manuals" tab for more information.

Fuel Type To create heat, some form of fuel is required. Fuel Type specifies what the product uses as an input to create heat.
Natural Gas
Vent Type Products that use combustion (burning) of fuel to create heat also create potentially dangerous gasses that need to be exhausted (AKA "Vented"). Depending on the product, venting can be done via a chimney, through a side wall, or use a second vent to provide fresh air to the appliance.
Direct Vent

Blower Type Blower type describes the motor that powers the fan in the unit. PSC multi-speed is the standard motor that operates with pre-set fan speed levels. ECM multi-speed are more efficient but still operate with pre-set fan speeds. Finally, ECM variable-speed motors are also energy efficient and automatically adjust to changing system conditions.

My furnace now brings air into the bottom and the heat goes out the top. Will this furnace work?
James D.
from Nebraska
November 04, 2016
Answer
Yes, this furnace is designed for an upflow configuration.
+
With horizontal installation, where can I put the return duct?
Marland
from Pennsylvania
February 17, 2016
Answer
When using a GMSS96 furnace in a horizontal installation, the return duct must be connected to the base of the blower cabinet (formerly the bottom of the furnace). The duct work cannot connect to the "sides" of the furnace.
+
Can the GMSS96 be vented thru a standard double wall chimney thru the roof? There is also going to be a 40 gallon hot water heater tied into same chimney.
Robert
from Missouri
December 04, 2015
Answer
No, Goodman GMSS96 furnaces cannot be vented through the same chimney as your water heater. The furnace will need it's own dedicated intake and exhaust.

A condensing gas furnace achieves its high level of efficiency by extracting almost all of the heat from the products of combustion and cooling them to the point where condensation takes place. Because of the relatively low flue gas temperature and water condensation requirements, PVC pipe is used as venting material. In addition to PVC and ABS pipe and fittings, Innoflue® by Centrotherm Eco Systems and PolyPro® by M&G Duravent are also approved vent and combustion air materials for installations in the U.S.A. and Canada.
